In 2010 Ibiza Rocks started booking iconic names like Ian Brown, The Prodigy, The Specials, Madness, Happy Mondays and New Order to make their line-ups even more attractive. With this kind of artists they get so much local interest and this week it seemed like the whole of Ibiza was going to be there. The list of famous faces in attendance was endless and extra vip areas had to be added to accommodate all the demand. This was undoubtedly the most eagerly anticipated event of the summer... the legendary Nile Rodgers and his Chic at Ibiza Rocks!
As mentioned yesterday afternoon, our Chic experience started early as we were invited to the press conference with Mr Rodgers and Skream that took place at 4pm at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel with some great anecdotes about his long career (especially interesting the one about the story behind Chic's biggest hit "Le Freak"). Afterwards the attendees were also welcome to stay for the band's soundcheck. The people in the balconies followed what was happening on stage, even singing along and dancing, and you could see in their faces the excitement.
After Ste-V-Something, Colin Peters and Doorly, Skream (who did a surprise guest appearance three weeks ago in that same stage), had the privilege to warm up for Chic.
The producer and dj (also member of the dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man along with Benga and Artwork) delivered a brilliant hour-long set of reworked disco classics. Half-way through it Nile came on stage with his camera to take a few snaps of the crowd and stayed with him for a while having a laugh, enjoying the great tunes like the rest of us and showing that the camaraderie amongst them that we already witnessed during the press conference is real. Then Skream and Doorly continued back to back on the side of the stage (while the main stage was getting ready) the twenty minutes before Chic came out.
Amazing disco vibes to get in the mood for what was about to come!
Chic's busy touring schedule included two dates in Spain this summer: last friday in Marbella and last night in Ibiza (Mallorca Rocks had a different line-up this week). We've been waiting all summer long for this moment and it finally arrived. Having seen them last summer at the short-lived Ibiza 123 Festival, we knew what to expect but that didn't make the experience any less exciting... quite the contrary!
After a short announcement through the sound system, the hitmaker and the other eight members of the band took the stage to the delight of the audience. The multi-talented Nile, who will be 61 in two weeks (although he looks much younger), is one of the most influential and prolific producers and songwriters of all time. The worldwide success of his recent collaboration with Daft Punk for "Get Lucky" proves that he still has his finger firmly on the pulse.
Who don't remember "Everybody Dance", "I Want Your Love" or "Le Freak"? Who haven't danced to "I'm Coming Out" and "Upside Down" (Diana Ross), "He's The Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family" (Sister Sledge), "Lady" (Modjo) or "Like A Virgin" (Madonna)? We heard all those and more, classic after classic, during one hour and forty minutes of disco heaven (the longest show ever at Ibiza Rocks). Special mention to "Let's Dance" (David Bowie) sung by the drummer and the closing "Good Times" where they invited a lot of people onto the stage to help them sing it.
After the final song and while the band was thanking the crowd for the awesome support, "Get Lucky" came out blasting through the speakers and everybody sang the song of the summer as it was a classic too. Nile took the opportunity to thank everybody for pushing it to number one... a beautiful way to finish a night that we'll never forget!
When Doorly grabbed the mic after the gig he described it as the best night in Ibiza Rocks' history and there's nothing else to add to that statement as it sums it up perfectly.
The disco fest continued at Ibiza Rocks Bar (with Doorly, Skream and friends), Es Paradis (with Ste, Colin and Patt The Postman Nazemi) and Pikes (with Andy Carroll and Andy Boilerhouse Dean)!
Lots of pics from last night, the best ones will be posted later along the setlist, videos, etc...
